L.A. Object & David Hammons Body Prints documents the work of African American and multicultural artists working with assemblage in Los Angeles in the 1960s and 1970s during the civil rights movement, the 1965 Watts rebellion and the era's general social and cultural upheaval. Artists include: Ed Bereal, Wallace Berman, Nathaniel Bustion, Alonzo Davis, Dale Davis, Charles Dickson, Melvin Edwards, David Hammons, George Herms, Daniel LaRue Johnson, Ed Kienholz, Senga Nengudi, John Outterbridge, Noah Purifoy, Joe Ray, John Riddle, Betye Saar, Kenzi Shiokava, and Timothy Washington.

Central to this book are the unique body prints of David Hammons, created when the artist lived in Los Angeles. Nuanced, ironic, often political commentaries relevant to the African-American experience, this early body of work is presented for the first time within the art historical context from which it arose.

With photographic contributions by Bruce Talamon and Harry Drinkwater. Designed by Lorraine Wild/Green Dragon Office.
